Canadian web hosting matters most to an Ontario business in three situations: when most visitors are in Canada and every fraction of a second counts, when a client or a contract requires data to stay in the country, and when the business handles sensitive personal information and wants the simplest possible answer about where it lives. Outside those cases, a well run host in the northern United States can serve an Ontario business just as well. The server's location is one factor, not the whole decision.
Speed for Canadian visitors
Data travels physically, so a server closer to your visitors answers a little sooner. For a site whose customers are in Ontario, a server in Toronto or Montreal is about as close as it gets.
The gain over a server in the eastern United States is small, and a visitor would struggle to notice it on its own. The gain over a server overseas is not small, and it is paid on every request the page makes.
A heavy website on Canadian hosting is still a heavy website. Location helps most when the site itself is already lean.
Privacy law, in plain terms
For most private businesses in Ontario, the federal privacy law, PIPEDA, applies. It does not ban storing personal information outside Canada.
What it does require is that you stay responsible for that information when a provider handles it for you, that you protect it properly, and that you are open with people about the fact that it may be processed in another country.
Some public bodies and some sectors work under stricter rules, and health information has its own laws in several provinces. If you handle health records or work for government, check what applies to you with someone qualified before you choose where the data lives.
When a contract decides it for you
Government agencies, hospitals, school boards and some larger companies write data residency into their supplier contracts. If you sell to them, the question is already answered.
Read the clause carefully. Some only cover the application and its database; some cover backups and email as well. A host in Canada with backups stored somewhere else may not meet it.
What Canadian hosting does not do
It does not make a site rank in Canada on its own. Google has said it does not rely on server location to decide which country a site is for. A .ca domain, content written for Canadian customers and a complete Google Business Profile do far more.
It does not guarantee better support. A Canadian host can still answer tickets slowly. Test support before you commit, wherever the servers are.
The sensible default
For an Ontario business selling mostly in Canada, hosting in Canada is a sensible default, and it takes one question off the table in any future contract or privacy review.
For a business selling across borders, pick the region where most customers are, and put a content delivery network in front so visitors further away are served from a nearby copy.
Questions people ask
- Is it illegal for a Canadian business to host its website outside Canada?
- Not for most private businesses. PIPEDA allows personal information to be processed outside Canada, as long as the business stays accountable for it, protects it and is open with people about it. Some public sector bodies, health organisations and contracts have stricter rules, so check those if they apply to you.
- Does Canadian hosting help SEO in Canada?
- Very little on its own. Google has said it does not rely on server location to work out which country a site serves. A .ca domain, content written for Canadian customers and a complete Google Business Profile matter much more.
- Where are the servers of a typical Canadian host?
- Most Canadian hosting runs in data centres around Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Always ask for the city, and ask where the backups are stored, because the two are not always in the same place.
